Out-Of-Door Academy Out-Of-Door Academy

Founded as an elementary school on Siesta Key by Fanneal Harrison, ODA was purchased by a parent group and was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in 1977. The school opened a high school division in 1996 and now offers a full pre-K-12 program to students in Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties. The academy provides college preparatory instruction in the traditional disciplines, as well as a broad selection of enrichment classes. Small class size throughout the school results in individual attention. The lower school curriculum (grades pre-K-6) emphasizes the fundamentals of reading, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Children also receive instruction in marine science, computers, library skills, art, music and physical education. While continuing to stress the traditional subject areas, the upper school program (grades 7-12) also includes honors and Advanced Placement course work. The use of technology is an important part of the curriculum at all grade levels. Both lower and upper school students may participate in after-school athletics. Boys and girls perform 20 hours of required community service each year. The lower school occupies the original campus on Siesta Key, while the upper school is situated on the mainland at Lakewood Ranch on Deer Drive.
