Osaka International School
4-16 Onohara Nishi 4-chome, Mino, Osaka, 562-0032 Japan
Offering an English-language program beginning at age 4 and running through high school, OIS prepares its students primarily for universities outside of Japan. The school is affiliated with Senri International School, a Japanese-medium institution that serves pupils who have returned to Japan after time spent abroad. The relationship between these two schools allows for jointly conducted music, art and physical education courses, as well as sports and other after-school activities. The elementary school (grades PS-5) commences with an early childhood program for four- and five-year-olds that incorporates movement and play. Multi-age groupings designed to address specific developmental needs combine children in grades 1 and 2, as well as those in grades 3 and 4. Single-grade instruction begins in grade 5. Focusing on the transition from elementary school to high school, the middle school (grades 6-8) features a varied academic program, small classes, individual and group guidance, an advisor program and activities. When dictated by individual need and ability level, boys and girls may cross grade levels in certain subjects, among them music and Japanese. The high school program blends elements of different educational systems. Of particular note is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, which OIS conducts in grades 11 and 12.
