North Country School
4382 Cascade Rd, Lake Placid, NY 12946
NCS is located on a 200-acre working farm in the Adirondack Forest Preserve, a wilderness area of mountains, lakes and forests. Children, who live in house groups of eight to 10 under the supervision of a teaching-staff couple, participate in all phases of housework and farm work. The school grows many of its own vegetables organically. Along with formal school work, each child has some daily responsibility. A solid curriculum in the basic subjects prepares graduates for leading preparatory schools and is reinforced through field trips to points of environmental, cultural and social significance. Facilities for music study in orchestral instruments, piano and voice are offered. The arts program offers creative work in painting, drawing, sculpture, weaving, ceramics, woodwork, batik and photography. Practical shop work is gained through routine repairs and construction around the premises. Physical exercise balances useful, productive work with recreation and sport. Skating, skiing on the school's rope-tow-equipped hill, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are winter pursuits. Mountaineering and hiking opportunities exist year-round, and Lake Placid's 1980 Winter Olympics facilities are only seven miles away.
