New Canaan Country School
635 Frogtown Rd, PO Box 997, New Canaan, CT 06840
NCCS was founded as The Community School by Edith Dudley and Effie Dunton, coprincipals from the founding date to 1933. Due to the growth of its student body, the school moved in 1936 to Grace Hill, where the institution assumed its present name. The campus has since undergone significant expansion and improvement. The academic program features the basic disciplines of English, math, social studies, science and foreign language. Latin, Spanish, Mandarin and French constitute the foreign language program, and computer instruction begins in the lower school. All pupils are involved in a broad and varied creative arts program that makes music, art, wood shop, creative dance and drama an integral part of each student's education. Field trips, guest speakers, films and community resources are used extensively to enrich the curriculum. Pupils in grades 6-9 embark on excursions of up to seven days to such destinations as Washington, DC; the Florida Keys; Nantucket, MA; Memphis, TN; Gettysburg, PA; and outdoor education centers in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Boys and girls perform community service projects on and off campus, and all upper schoolers take part in interscholastic athletics.
