National Experimental High School, Bilingual Department
300 Jieshou Rd, Hsinchu, 30078 Taiwan
The Bilingual Department, which operates alongside a traditional Taiwanese program that follows the national curriculum and prepares boys and girls for domestic colleges, provides American-based programs for English-speaking children. NEHS' student body in this section consists largely of ethnic Chinese children who were raised overseas and can speak both English and Chinese, although English is generally the first language. The curriculum's design enables departing students to either pursue Taiwanese education or continue Western-style education (and eventually attend college) overseas, usually in the US. Students in the bilingual program take compulsory Chinese language (grades 1-12) and Chinese social studies (grades 1-8) courses in Mandarin. The college preparatory curriculum also includes requirements in such areas as math, science, US history and economics. Pupils in this section may receive preparation for the US College Boards, in addition to the ACT and AP exams. Various electives, honors and AP courses, and extracurricular activities are available at the high school level.
