Morristown-Beard was formed in 1971 by a merger of the Morristown School for boys and the Beard School for girls. Morristown, which was founded in 1891 by three Harvard graduates—Thomas Q. Browne, Arthur P. Butler and Francis C. Woodman—was long considered a preparatory school for Harvard. Beard was established the same year in Orange by Lucie C. Beard. The school is located on a 22-acre campus that is bordered on two sides by a county park arboretum. The college preparatory curriculum features a full complement of Advanced Placement, honors, independent study and elective courses. The math center allows students access to a system of microcomputers. Students in grades 9-12 satisfy a 16-hour community service requirement, and boys and girls must also complete a senior project. Advanced seminars allow talented and motivated juniors and seniors to explore an intellectual area in depth, under the guidance of selected faculty members.
