Moravian Academy Moravian Academy

The school resulted from a 1971 merger between Moravian Seminary for Girls, the oldest American girls' boarding school, and Moravian Preparatory School, both founded in 1742. The lower and middle schools (on Heckewelder Place and West Market Street, respectively) occupy the old Preparatory campus in the midst of the historic colonial section of Bethlehem. The seminary was founded by Countess Benigna, daughter of Count Zinzendorf of Saxony. Eleanor Lee, grandniece of Washington, was among its pupils, as were Chancellor Livingston's daughter, Cornelia, wife of Robert Fulton; two daughters of Nathaniel Greene; and others representing the old colonial families of Dutch, German, Quaker, French and English heritage. Some of the original buildings of the academy are now part of Moravian College. The upper school occupies a 120-acre country estate with modern buildings, the land being an alumna gift of one of the last pieces of property held by the heirs of William Penn in direct grant from the English crown. In addition to classes in the standard disciplines, Moravian's college preparatory curriculum includes religion, fine arts and global language course work. MA's High School Scholars Program allows a limited number of qualified seniors to take college-level classes at nearby colleges. Upper school boys and girls perform 40 hours of community service by the end of junior year. Independent study programs may be arranged, and some pupils participate in a study abroad program.
