Montclair Kimberley Academy

201 Valley Rd, Montclair, NJ 07042

In 1974, Montclair Academy for boys (founded in 1887) merged with The Kimberley School for girls (founded in 1906). The academy's three campuses, located in residential northern New Jersey on Orange Road (grades pre-K-3), Valley Road (grades 4-8) and Lloyd Road (grades 9-12), enroll a diverse student population from Montclair and more than 70 neighboring communities. The college preparatory upper school curriculum features various elective, honors and Advanced Placement courses. Classes meet in 75-minute blocks. MKA's Core Works program enables pupils at all grade levels to undertake in-depth study of notable works of literature and art from both Western and non-Western traditions. Writing is taught as a cumulative, continuous process across classrooms and campuses; teachers formally evaluate student portfolios in grades 3, 7 and 11. The academy integrates technology into the curriculum at all grade levels, and a one-to-one laptop program serves boys and girls in grades 4-12. The foreign studies program combines classroom learning with educational travel and exchange programs. Outdoor education, field trips at all grade levels, and community and school service activities afford students opportunities to learn outside the classroom. The fine and performing arts are integrated into the school's curriculum, and pupils on all three campuses participate in musical and dramatic productions. Students in grades 11 and 12 satisfy a 10-hour community service requirement each year.
