With an outdoor ranch life that utilizes opportunities provided by the school's setting, Midland retains the rugged simplicity that has characterized the school since its inception. Influential in the region, this successful college preparatory school was the creation of Paul and Louise Squibb, its founders and heads for 20 years. Midland's curriculum provides a solid liberal arts grounding in the core disciplines and allows qualified pupils to engage in independent study. Academic classes meet Monday through Saturday, with each specific course generally assembling on four of the six days. Elective choice varies annually depending upon student interest. All boarding pupils live on campus in wood cabins. As the school is a working ranch, students grow and harvest their own food in a nine-acre organic garden. Boys and girls also share various other chores on the ranch. Seniors oversee the work program with the supervision of faculty, thereby developing leadership skills. In addition to the integrated communal projects, students take part in such activities as cultural excursions and athletics. A popular equestrian program consists of horse husbandry and both English and Western riding. Situated on a 2860-acre tract in the Santa Ynez Valley, the school also provides students with many opportunities for camping and hiking.
