8600 McDonogh Rd, Owings Mills, MD 21117
Established by the endowment of John McDonogh as a school for scholarship students, this institution began accepting paying students in 1922. In 1975, coeducation was instituted in the day department. The boarding department became coeducational in 1983. All upper schoolers complete 40 hours of community service prior to graduation. Athletic participation is not required, but those who do not take part in a sport must take physical education classes. The riding program features 80 horses and extensive professional facilities on the school's 800-acre campus. International programs include upper school trips to France, Germany, Japan, Spain and the Ukraine, as well as a yearlong exchange program with Seijo and Gauken Senior High School in Tokyo, Japan. Out-of-state and international students boarding at McDonough may reside with host families.
