Massanutten Military Academy

614 S Main St, Woodstock, VA 22664

The school was founded by the Virginia Classis of the Reformed Church to prepare the children of the Shenandoah Valley for college. For 50 years, with the assistance of a board of trustees representing several religious denominations, Howard J. Benchoff devoted his energies to its development. In 1917, the academy adopted a military program whose structured environment remains an integral part of school life. Robert J. Benchoff succeeded his father in 1955 and continued to expand the enrollment and the plant facilities until his death in 1968. Within a small-class environment, MMA emphasizes its core curriculum of English, math, science, social studies and foreign language. Noteworthy aspects of the program include reading comprehension courses, dual-enrollment college-credit courses, and various fine and performing arts offerings. A daily academic assistance period, an evening study period, a homework assistance program and a learning support program are among MMA's offerings. The academy's rural location on 40 acres in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley allows for a variety of activities. Scheduled trips are made to cultural and athletic events in Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD. Other pursuits include hiking and skiing in the nearby Massanutten Range of the Blue Ridge Mountains and in the George Washington National Forest.
