Marymount School

1026 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028

Mother Joseph Butler of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary founded this school. Located directly opposite the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park, Marymount occupies four turn-of-the-20th-century Beaux Arts mansions that are designated landmarks of the Metropolitan Museum Historic District. In 2010, the school added a fifth building, a former parochial school edifice, on East 97th Street. At all grade levels, Marymount's interdisciplinary curriculum makes extensive use of the international network of Marymount schools, mobile computing technology and the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art. The school places particular emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math; financial literacy; social justice; leadership; and philanthropy. The lower school (nursery through grade 3) aims to develop the child's language, reading, mathematical and science skills within a structured environment. Only boys with a sibling currently or formerly enrolled at the school may gain admittance to the coeducational preschool program. Marymount schedules weekly visits to science laboratories beginning at the nursery level, and children attend lab three times per week by grade 3. Art, music, dance and physical education form an integral part of the curriculum. The middle school (grades 4-7), based in a Beaux-Arts townhouse on East 82nd Street, utilizes modified and gradually increasing departmentalization in the major subject areas. After commencing with Spanish in kindergarten, the foreign language program continues in middle school with the addition of French and Latin in grade 4. Within the program, girls have various opportunities to achieve and to display independence and leadership. The upper school curriculum (grades 8-12) features honors classes in all disciplines, a full Advanced Placement program, and various electives. Emphasizing the classic disciplines and scientific inquiry, the curriculum prepares students for competitive colleges. A strong extracurricular and athletic program; a five-week, off-campus internship for seniors; and community service at all levels complement academics. Girls may take part in international exchange programs, including a semester abroad at one of the overseas Marymount schools.
