Manhattan Country School
7 E 96th St, New York, NY 10128
Founded to carry out the ideas of Martin Luther King, Jr., by teaching and practicing democracy in the classroom, MCS enrolls a racially, culturally and economically diverse student body. Combining the progressive principles of John Dewey with a multicultural approach to its curriculum, the school's program includes both individualized instruction and group learning experiences within a defined structure. The hands-on, experiential curriculum, which incorporates the resources of New York City, emphasizes analytical and critical-thinking skills. Spanish is available at all grade levels, and pupils also take art, music, shop, library and physical education. Electives are part of the curriculum in the upper grades. The school owns a 185-acre farm in the Catskill Mountains to which all students above age 7 make regular, extended trips. Its program emphasizes sustainability through farm work, food production, cooking and nutrition, construction of textiles from the farm's wool, nature studies and the responsibilities of an interdependent community.
