Lowell Whiteman School

42605 County Rd 36, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

Founded by Lowell Whiteman, the school offers traditional academics and features small classes, required proctored evening study halls and a heavy emphasis on academic effort. Graduates typically matriculate at four-year colleges. Located near a mountain resort community, the school utilizes its environment for academic and recreational purposes. In addition to a full range of college preparatory courses, further opportunities include skiing, snowboarding, ecological studies, mountaineering, horseback riding, white-water rafting and backpacking. Annual foreign travel is required of all students—except for high-ability competitive skiers and snowboarders. LWS provides a well-balanced academic/athletic program for high school snowboarders and Alpine, Nordic and freestyle ski competitors. A number of school graduates have participated in the Winter Olympics.
