Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School
272 6th Ave, New York, NY 10014
The student body at LREI comes from all parts of New York City, reflecting the city's economic, ethnic and cultural diversity. The school began as an experiment in the New York City public schools, but it has been independent since 1932. The curriculum throughout the school revolves around core themes, integrating language arts/English and social studies/history, as well as a required arts program. Writing is emphasized in all curricular areas. In the lower school (grades pre-K-4), understanding and skills in reading, mathematics and science are stressed. The middle school (grades 5-8) was established as a formal entity in 1986. Its program, which is based on a strong humanities curriculum, stresses theme studies and skills development. The high school (grades 9-12), established in 1941 and located on Charlton Street, offers a college preparatory course of study with a wide range of electives. Boys and girls perform 25 hours of community service in grades 9-12, and seniors complete a six-week independent project.
