The school is located on the Crystal River, within the 72,000-acre Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Leelanau is an experientially based college preparatory school that serves students with learning differences. Parents may track their children's progress through updates that are available every 72 hours. Leelanau's multisensory approach utilizes an integrated curriculum. Within the humanities department, for example, instructors place emphasis on the historical timelines and events that correlate with the literature of the time; in a similar fashion, math and science course work enables boys and girls to study the relationship between mathematical models and scientific principles. During a compulsory senior seminar course, pupils produce a 10- to 12-page research paper and make a formal presentation of their findings. Recreational and competitive sports, opportunities in the arts and community service options complement the curriculum.
