This long-established school was founded in Cleveland when Jennie Prentiss opened a private school for girls in her own home. Laurel moved in 1928 to its present location in suburban Shaker Heights, where it has undergone subsequent expansion, including the 140-acre outdoor education and athletic facility in Russell, 20 minutes east of the main campus. Laurel accepts both boys and girls into its early childhood center, which utilizes a hands-on, experiential approach. The theme-based primary school emphasizes fundamental academic skills, while the middle school offers an integrated approach to the sciences and the humanities and commences formal foreign language instruction. The upper school curriculum (grades 9-12) allows qualified girls to take Advanced Placement classes or to enroll in college-level courses through a program coordinated with Kenyon College. The school also maintains a program with the Cleveland Institute of Music. During the upper school years, each student performs at least 50 hours of community service. Service is part of the curriculum in the lower and middle schools as well.
