La Scuola D'italia
12 E 96th St, New York, NY 10128
Founded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the educational needs of Italian families residing in the New York area, La Scuola d'Italia Guglielmo Marconi conducts a classical, bilingual program that is rooted in the Italian and European traditions. The multicultural program combines elements of the Italian and American systems. Students become bilingual and bicultural through the use of English and Italian as languages of instruction from preschool through 12th grade. The main curriculum spans a wide range of studies in mathematics, the natural and physical sciences, the humanities, the social sciences and the arts. Boys and girls perform 40 hours of required community service prior to graduation. Upon adding a second location on East 67th Street in September 2000, La Scuola launched a curriculum at the middle school level (grades 6-8) that employs English and Italian as the languages of instruction. This program combines a firm grounding in math, science and the liberal arts with rigorous language instruction that provides a strong foundation for advanced study at the high school and college levels. Participating students also develop a deeper appreciation of the Italian and European cultures. La Scuola d'Italia maintains cultural collaborations with various Italian institutions in the city, among them the Italian Cultural Institute and the Italian Consulate General. At the high school level, the school offers supplementary cultural project opportunities in New York City and abroad, including exchange programs with Italian schools and meetings with ambassadors and other dignitaries, as well as notable Italian artists and interpreters. Neither Italian fluency nor prior knowledge of the language is required for applicants to grades pre-K-9. Those applying to higher grades must speak the language at an intermediate level or above. Italian as a Second Language is available in all school divisions and at all levels, and English as a Second Language is part of the curriculum as well.
