International School of the Peninsula
151 Laura Ln, Palo Alto, CA 94303
ISTP opened its doors as the Peninsula French-American School and, in 1996, became the International School of the Peninsula, adding a Chinese-American section, a middle school and a second campus. Providing immersion-based bilingual and multicultural education, the lower campus on Cowper Street serves children in nursery through kindergarten, while the main campus on Laura Lane offers instruction for pupils in grades 1-8. The school maintains two language-immersion programs that serve children in nursery school through grade 5: Mandarin Chinese/English and French/English. To gain entry into either program at the elementary school level, students must be proficient in the target language. Those without experience in Chinese or French may enroll only at the nursery, prekindergarten or kindergarten levels. Pupils in the Chinese section spend 50 percent of their time immersed in Chinese, while students in the French program devote 70 to 80 percent of their time to French immersion. ISTP's middle school program joins boys and girls from both immersion programs for classes that are conducted in English, then separates the respective groups for courses that employ Mandarin or French as the language of instruction. ISTP's middle school addresses the needs of students planning to attend an American public or private high school, as well as those wishing to enroll in a French or international institution. In addition to language and cultural immersion, the school conducts strong technology, arts and music programs. Boys and girls may also engage in cultural exchange trips to such countries as France, China and Costa Rica.
