Originally founded to accommodate children of scientists from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics of Trieste, the school patterns its program on the standard American curriculum. All students take art, music, physical education and Italian. English as a Second Language is taught in nursery and kindergarten. Chief seaport of the Austrian Empire until World War I, when it passed to Italy, and claimed by Yugoslavia after World War II, Trieste is situated on the gulf of the same name.
