Interlochen Arts Academy Interlochen Arts Academy

Interlochen was founded by Dr. Joseph E. Maddy as an outgrowth of the National Music Camp, now known as Interlochen Arts Camp. The 1200-acre, wooded campus hugs the shores of two northern Michigan glacial lakes, and encompasses both rivers and fields. The academy combines preprofessional training in the fine arts with comprehensive college preparatory academics. Both high school and postgraduate year opportunities are available. Students major in creative writing, dance, motion picture arts, music, theater arts, visual arts or comparative arts. A variety of offerings in English and literature, English as a Second Language, world languages, history and political science, science, mathematics, and physical and health education is available. Students are regularly exposed to a wide range of talent in their fields, as visiting artist-instructors hold master classes at the academy. Off-campus performance tours in the different arts divisions are an integral part of the curriculum. Movies, theatrical performances, coffeehouses, dances, art exhibits, orchestra, band and small-ensemble concerts, readings, recitals and jam sessions are some of the regularly scheduled on-campus activities. In addition, each weekday evening, the academy provides organized physical recreation. Boarding students perform at least two hours of weekly community service on campus; work responsibilities may include food service, residence hall desk duty, tech crew, recycling crew, mail delivery or academic tutoring. While many graduates continue studying in their arts specialty, others pursue varied careers unrelated to the arts.
