Indian Mountain School Indian Mountain School

Founded as a boarding school for boys by Francis Behn Riggs, a Groton graduate and friend of Dr. Endicott Peabody, Indian Mountain has maintained high academic standards over the years. Girls, long admitted as day students, were first accepted into the boarding program in 1991. In 2003, IMS effected a merger with the Town Hill School, a nearby elementary school that dates back to 1938, thereby expanding the day program from prekindergarten through grade 9. The program for children in grades pre-K-4 operates at the 10-acre Town Hill campus on Interlaken Road. The curriculum is traditional, with strong emphasis placed on verbal and written skills and disciplined study habits. Curricular offerings include earth science and biology, a two-year American history course for seventh and eighth graders, and weekly computer instruction for pupils in grades 7-9. Special-help classes are held four times a week to reinforce classroom work. Students' effort and attitude are evaluated every two weeks and are discussed with their faculty advisors. IMS also operates a learning skills center that provides supportive, remedial and English as a Second Language tutoring. The school's 600-acre main campus, which includes ponds, marshes and woodland, provides opportunities for exploration and outdoor education. The outdoor program features a ropes course.
