Hyde School at Bath
616 High St, Bath, ME 04530
After several years of planning and with the handsome estate of shipbuilder John S. Hyde for a campus, this school was opened by Joseph Gauld in 1966. The school became coeducational in 1971. Hyde's college preparatory program is character based and promotes an interdisciplinary curriculum encompassing traditional secondary academics, athletics, the performing arts and community service. In addition to traditional grading, faculty and peer evaluations are stressed. An unusual amount of responsibility is given to each student in the overall decision-making and operation of the school. The Family Education Center, founded in 1977, assists parents in understanding Hyde's program and helps with a network of regional parent groups. Acceptance to Hyde is based on a family interview conducted on campus, in conjunction with papers composed after the interview by both the prospective student and his or her parents. Admission to the school is year-round. Since July 1996, Hyde has operated a second campus in Woodstock, CT (see separate listing).
