The school, founded by Mary Grimes Hutchison, is located on a 52-acre campus in residential east Memphis. The upper school curriculum utilizes block scheduling and instructs each student in the traditional liberal arts disciplines, emphasizing the study of literature, languages, mathematics, history, science and the arts. Both honors and AP courses are available. In the upper school, a coordinate program with the adjacent Memphis University School for boys allows students and faculty to jointly participate in academic seminars, civic service projects and theater and music programs. The schools also share athletic facilities, including a tennis center built through joint fundraising activities. Students aspiring to a career in dance, music, theater or visual arts may pursue a special certificate through Hutchison's Arts Academy. Technology resources include laptop computers (issued to students in grades 1-12), a digital media lab and schoolwide wireless Internet access. Girls in grades 9-12 perform 15 hours of required community service each year.
