Founded in Washington, DC, as a small girls' school by Jessie Moon Holton and Carolyn Hough Arms, this school has been at its present, suburban campus since 1963. Faculty utilize a variety of teaching methods while emphasizing the processes of inquiry, critical thinking and reading, and problem solving. The sequential college preparatory curriculum features strong arts and athletic programs, honors and Advanced Placement courses, and a number of electives, particularly in the pure and applied sciences and the social sciences. Juniors and seniors may complete an independent study course and may register for consortium classes at any of four nearby schools. Girls perform 50 hours of community service prior to senior year. In May, all seniors take part in either a senior project or a structured seminar. Fifth and sixth graders supply their own iPads, while students in grades 7-12 purchase laptop computers for classroom use.
