One of the city's first independent schools, Holland Hall opened at a site near downtown Tulsa, before later moving to Birmingham Place. Realizing in the late 1960s that developments in technology, math and foreign language would soon demand additional space and technical support, the board of trustees decided to relocate the school to a 162-acre campus in a wooded area of south Tulsa in the fall of 1970. At all grade levels, the liberal arts curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and lifetime learning skills. The primary school (grades PS-3) follows a developmentally appropriate program that encourages intellectual and open inquiry. In-depth units of study address academic, artistic, physical and social/emotional areas. These thematic units employ technology as a learning tool. During the middle school years (grades 4-8), the interdisciplinary program balances a solid curriculum with developmental, exploratory experiences; pupils gain increasing levels of independence as they progress through grades 7 and 8. Spanish is part of the program in the earlier middle school grades, while Latin and French are both added in grade 6. Art and music classes, competitive athletics (starting in grade 6), community service projects, student-faculty plays, mini-mester courses, ecology outings and field trips are other notable aspects of middle school life. Students in the upper school (grades 9-12) follow a flexible modular schedule that facilitates the development of time-management skills and provides opportunities for individual and small-group learning experiences. The curriculum enables boys and girls to engage in Advanced Placement and honors courses, research and experimentation in various fields, math competitions, technology projects and community service. Upper schoolers also have access to a strong advisory program. Holland Hall conducts exchanges with schools in China, France, Mexico and Spain.
