Hindman Settlement School

254 Hwy 160 S, PO Box 844, Hindman, KY 41822

Utilizing an explicit multisensory phonic approach to reading instruction, the school remediates dyslexia in children from the Appalachian region. The center comprises an elementary day school, after-school tutoring sessions, and a summer tutorial program. Parent volunteers and college students receive training that enables them to tutor children in Knott County and five surrounding counties. The full-time school emphasizes reading and math in addition to writing, science and social studies. Students in the after-school program attend one evening each week for reading, auditory and social values instruction. The only fee associated with the school-year programs is one for after-school tutoring, if the child receives it. The summer school provides an intense, structured remedial setting. It features one-on-one tutoring in reading and three-to-one tutoring in math for students ages 6-20. Many of the summer session's participants attend public school during the regular academic year. The school accepts the following conditions: Dyslexia, Learning Differences.
