Hawthorne Country Day School
5 Bradhurst Ave, Hawthorne, NY 10532
This state-approved school serves special-needs children with autism/pervasive developmental disorder, intellectual disabilities, speech and language impairments, and multiple disabilities. Various academic, vocational and language-building programs are taught within the framework of applied behavior analysis. Teaching methods emphasize positive reinforcement, continuous measurement of learning and strategic/tactical data analysis based upon graphic data displays. Staff analyze socially inappropriate behavior, such as aggression, self-injury and noncompliance, then work to systematically reinforce alternative behaviors. The school typically treats behavior problems as instructional opportunities rather than manifestations of an underlying pathology.
