HW was formed from the 1989 merger of Harvard School (for boys), founded in 1900, and the Westlake School for Girls, established in 1904. The school occupies both former campuses, with grades 7-9 located at the Westlake campus on North Faring Road in Los Angeles and grades 10-12 conducted on the Harvard campus on Coldwater Canyon Avenue. The college preparatory curriculum features individualized work and instruction, and it is supplemented by a variety of elective courses. A more tightly structured program is offered in the lower grades, with increased independent responsibility introduced as the student progresses. Seniors may develop their own independent study programs. HW pupils may study abroad in France, Spain, India, Italy or China through the School Year Abroad program, or they may spend a semester at the Mountain School in Vershire, VT, or the High Mountain Institute in Leadville, CO. All boys and girls satisfy community service requirements: outreach project work in grades 7-9 and one project or 12 hours of service per year in grades 10-12.
