Hargrave Military Academy

200 Military Dr, Chatham, VA 24531

When a Baptist minister with six sons convinced a local entrepreneur of the need for boys in the area to obtain a Christian education, the two men combined resources to establish a school. Rev. T. Ryland Sanford served as Chatham Training School's first president, and his benefactor, J. Hunt Hargrave, served as chairman of the board of trustees. In 1925, the school's name was changed to honor the man who had given form to Rev. Sanford's vision. Hargrave offers a sound college preparatory curriculum, with the majority of graduates matriculating at competitive colleges. The cadet corps organization, based on an infantry battalion, provides opportunities for leadership development and the assumption of responsibility.
