Established as a liberal arts boarding school for boys, Hackley now offers a rigorous academic program for both boys and girls. The lower school stresses both art and music, in addition to the traditional disciplines. Projects, field trips and hands-on activities supplement daily instruction, and interdisciplinary projects are common. Community service, environmental awareness, international studies and geography are integral aspects of the curriculum at this level. The study of foreign languages begins in the lower school, and field trips, assemblies, extracurricular activities, sports and social events complement the middle school schedule. Students in the upper school choose from a wider array of courses, sports and activities. In many disciplines, the program offers AP classes, as well as tutorials and seminars that provide extensive choice to the students through a wide range of electives. Graduation requirements include foreign language, laboratory sciences, and performing or visual arts course work. The athletic program for grades 7 and 8 stresses team sports at the interscholastic level; in the upper school, those who do not participate in interscholastic sports must choose a noncompetitive activity each season for after-school recreation. Such fitness electives include dance, squash and golf. Hackley's performing arts program includes concerts, recitals, serious drama and musicals.
