Grosse Pointe Academy
171 Lake Shore Rd, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236
Founded as the Academy of the Sacred Heart and originally operated by the Society of the Sacred Heart, GPA assumed its present name and nondenominational status in 1969. A Montessori early school program, the oldest of its kind in Michigan, serves children ages 2½-5. The school's pre-preparatory curriculum stresses basic skills development and features French, Spanish, Chinese, art, environmental science, music and religion courses. Various electives are also available. Located on a 20-acre campus overlooking Lake St. Clair, the academy supplements in-class instruction with museum visits, a daylong on-site biology class, and a multi-day trip to Washington, DC. Girls and boys in grades 7 and 8 fulfill a 20-hour annual service requirement, with 10 hours to be completed outside of school time. Eighth graders complete a research project in art, literature, journalism or science.
