Dr. Helen West Cooke, a female pediatrician, founded the school for her son Gordon. The oldest independent, coeducational elementary school in the state, the school conducts a child-centered program for a diverse student population. A rigorous, integrated and multicultural curriculum forms the basis for Gordon's academic program. The middle school (grades 5-8) provides an integrated math/science and humanities curriculum, as well as an individualized advisory program, leadership opportunities and community service. Spanish begins in kindergarten and is part of a more extensive middle school language program that also includes French. Team sports commence in grade 5, and extended-day programs are available to all children. Each year, students in grade 8 travel to Georgia and Alabama as part of the civil rights curriculum. Then, in May, eighth graders devote three weeks to a service learning project.
