Glenelg Country School
12793 Folly Quarter Rd, Ellicott City, MD 21042
Located in historic Glenelg Manor (dating from 1740) on 87 acres of fields and woodland, GCS was established for students in Howard County and the surrounding area. Emphasis is placed on academics, with creative arts, athletics and mandatory community service included. French and Spanish are offered from prekindergarten, Latin from grade 6 and Chinese from grade 9. Each year of high school features a compulsory interdisciplinary course: Freshmen take a humanities class that combines the origins of human society, history, anthropology and sociology with English literature; sophomores take a course combining Western literature with arts and ideas; juniors study American literature and expository writing in conjunction with a US history course; and seniors take part in an integrative seminar that reflects upon the "product and process of learning" across the curriculum. Advanced Placement courses, internships and independent study opportunities broaden the academic program. Upper school boys and girls perform 25 hours of community service annually. Also part of the curriculum are field trips to Baltimore and Washington, DC, that enable students to take advantage of cultural amenities such as art galleries, museums, the theater and historical sites.
