Stephen Girard, an early American businessman, endowed this five-day boarding school to educate orphaned boys. Today, Girard College enrolls boys and girls from limited-income families without one or both parents; the school furnishes full scholarships for its students. In addition to providing a college preparatory curriculum, Girard provides instruction in the following five areas: respect, responsibility, integrity, self-discipline and compassion. Juniors satisfy a 40-hour community service requirement. Students participate in recreational and enrichment activities at local museums, parks, historical sites, theaters, universities and sporting facilities.
