Founded and still conducted by the Brothers of Holy Cross, this school began as a small boarding secondary school for boys. Significant growth occurred in the ensuing decades, and a 1982 merger with the Glen Oak School for girls opened Gilmour's enrollment to female students. A Montessori preschool commenced operations in 1985, and a coeducational program for children in preschool through grade 6 was in place by 1988. The academy now occupies a well-equipped, 144-acre campus. Gilmour's curriculum, which has adapted over the years to reflect changes in business and technology, emphasizes critical-thinking, problem-solving and communicational skills. Students take seven courses per semester, each of which meets for 90 minutes every other class day. Advanced Placement offerings in the major disciplines challenge qualified pupils, and independent study allows boys and girls to pursue in-depth study in an area of particular interest. Students accumulate at least 60 hours of required community service in grades 9-12. Another graduation requirement is successful completion of the senior project. Taking place during the final month of the school year, this project allows boys and girls to identify an area of interest, design an internship around it, and prepare and deliver a final presentation.
