Georgetown Day School
4200 Davenport St NW, Washington, DC 20016
The first racially integrated school in the city, this parent-owned school now enrolls a student body with one-third pupils of color. The curriculum combines college preparation with an emphasis on the humanities and the arts and sciences. Features of the lower school program (grades pre-K-5) are the commencement of regular science study in prekindergarten and foreign language instruction beginning in grade 3. During the middle school years (grades 6-8), academic demands increase and pupils take part in such projects as the consumer science fair, on-site studies of Chesapeake Bay, and a two-month study of constitutional issues that includes personal interviews with national experts. GDS' varied high school curriculum (grades 9-12) incorporates block scheduling, as well as honors and Advanced Placement classes in most disciplines, and students have increased flexibility in course selection. High school students fulfill a 60-hour community service requirement prior to senior year through involvement with local, national and international service organizations. The lower and middle schools—which are conducted on MacArthur Boulevard Northwest—require boys and girls to engage in class service projects.
