Garrison Forest School
300 Garrison Forest Rd, Owings Mills, MD 21117
Established by Mary M. Livingston, Garrison Forest has always been characterized by high academic standards and a close association between faculty and students. The curriculum, with an emphasis on academic fundamentals, prepares students for leading colleges. In addition to the core courses of English, history, math, science, modern languages and Latin, girls choose among electives in the humanities, science and the arts. Seniors may explore academic or career interests in May through a three-week independent project or a professional internship. GFS assigns tablet computers to all students in grade 4; girls in grades 5-12 then purchase their own tablets. Beginning in first grade, all classrooms are equipped with wireless data projectors and mounted speakers. The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, a partnership between the school and Johns Hopkins University, recruits junior and senior girls from within the school and around the country to spend a semester in residence at GFS. In addition to following a customized curriculum, participants spend two afternoons a week on the Johns Hopkins campus engaging in hands-on research, science immersion experiences and mentoring activities with university faculty. Boys may enroll in the preschool and kindergarten programs only.
