Having long occupied gracious quarters on Rutherford Place, this Quaker school has undergone significant physical expansion over the years. The lower school program (grades K-4) places particular emphasis on problem solving and creative thinking. The departmentalized middle school (grades 5-8) offers ample opportunities for boys and girls to participate in activities such as community service and team sports. Qualified seniors may enroll in courses at New York University at no additional charge. Traditional college preparatory course work in the upper school (grades 9-12) is complemented by foreign and classical languages, technology, Advanced Placement classes, visual and performing arts offerings (including the opportunity to perform in professional theater space at the nearby Vineyard Theater), and an extensive electives and athletics program. Experiential education at Friends encompasses urban internships, senior projects and a wilderness and outdoor program. Pupils may take part in study-abroad programs in Spain, France and Italy, as well as in exchanges with schools in the Continental US. Students satisfy the following community service requirements: 10 hours of in-school service in grades 7-12, plus an additional 20 hours of off-campus service in grades 9-12.
