Friends Select School
17th St & Benjamin Franklin Pky, Philadelphia, PA 19103
Located in the cultural, corporate and business center of Philadelphia, Friends Select traces its Quaker beginnings to 1689. Coeducational since 1886, the school is still under the direct management of Friends, and religious course work is provided. The school's college preparatory curriculum, rooted in Quaker values, encourages the development of conceptual understanding and creative thought while emphasizing the ability to serve the community. Small classes and individual attention are program characteristics at all grade levels. Internships with local businesses can be arranged during spring of junior year or the following summer, and all seniors complete an independent project or internship. Essential research and presentation skills are taught beginning in prekindergarten. Upper school students meet once a week with a faculty advisor. Each spring, fine arts students spend two weeks at the Umberto Boccioni School in Milan, Italy, studying Renaissance art and culture. Interscholastic sports begin in grade 6. The school also offers after-school and vacation care, as well as summer programs for young children.
