Founded by Martha Babcock Foote, the school occupies a 18-acre, wooded site near Yale University. The strong academic program, which is complemented by art, music, drama and computers, includes a required six-subject course schedule in the upper grades. Lower school pupils take two years of both French and Spanish, then choose one language to study in grades 4-9; Latin is added to the curriculum in grades 7-9. Ninth graders participate in a compulsory Monday afternoon community service program. The school maintains an association with a sister school in Changsha, China. A Chinese guest teacher comes to Foote each autumn semester, and students from Yali Middle School (the sister school) visit during the fall. Each year, Foote's ninth graders visit Yali and tour parts of China over spring break. Foote's summer program provides various enrichment, recreational and theatrical options for boys and girls ages 4-18. An after-school program that includes enrichment mini-courses is available daily to children in grades K-6, and alternative programs operate during certain school vacations and holidays.
