Flintridge Preparatory School
4543 Crown Ave, La Canada Flintridge, CA 91011
Founded as Flintridge School for Boys and originally serving a student body of 22, the school occupies an eight-acre site at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Girls were first admitted in 1979, at which time the school assumed its current name. Boys and girls in grades 7 and 8 receive a thorough grounding in study techniques; reading, writing and oral communication; and critical thinking. Flintridge Prep assigns each seventh grader with a peer counselor early in the school year, and a trip in the fall enables students to become better acquainted with their classmates. Eighth graders, who also have a mentor, continue to develop fundamental learning skills. In grade 8, math and foreign language courses are at the high school level. During the upper school years (grades 9-12), academic demands gradually increase. Sophomores gain their first exposure to standardized testing, college counseling, and such schoolwide responsibilities as fundraising and event planning. All twelfth graders participate in Senior Initiative, which involves peer tutoring, peer counseling, service as Senior Buddies to eighth graders, or the pursuit of academic or artistic independent study. Toward the end of senior year, recent graduates, college educators and community professionals come to campus to share their insights on college life and career opportunities. Students engage in community service at all grade levels. Upper schoolers fulfill the following requirements: seven hours in grade 9, 10 hours annually in grades 10 and 11, and 24 hours off campus with a single agency in grade 12.
