Founded by Frederick J. Fessenden, the school balances a traditional curriculum with instruction in the visual and performing arts and training in athletics. Honors, regular and moderately paced sections accommodate individual needs in many subject areas. The lower school program emphasizes the basic skills of reading, oral and written language, and mathematics, enriched by courses in social studies, science and geography. In addition, Fessenden begins instruction in Spanish at the kindergarten level. Team sports begin in grade 5, and boys choose one athletic offering every season from a varied list of competitive team, intramural and recreational sports. Ninth-grade students are required to complete 10 hours of community service. The school's nonacademic programs (NAP) provide trips and activities for recreation and relaxation every weekend. Among the numerous options, which take advantage of the resources of Boston and New England, are seasonal outdoor activities, cultural and sporting events, school dances, sightseeing trips and movie nights.
