Founded in Morristown as the Mount Kemble School, FHCDS moved to its present site and assumed its current name in 1944. The rural, 54-acre campus in Somerset County is accessible to both New York City and Princeton. In the primary and intermediate schools (grades pre-K-5), children take part in self-contained classes in most academic areas, while specialists provide instruction in art, music, library, computer, science, Mandarin, Spanish and physical education. Public speaking is an important component of the program at all levels. The fully departmentalized upper school (grades 6-8) features such supplemental offerings as forensics, concert choir, band and drama. In addition, all pupils take Latin in grades 7 and 8. Community service is integrated into the curriculum throughout, and boys and girls must complete 12 hours of service prior to the end of grade 8. The school's adventure program, which commences in grade 5, consists of experiential learning and adventure pursuits.
