Situated on a New England-style campus in the residential Muirlands section of the city, Evans provides a traditional independent elementary program characterized by small classes and a family-like environment. The curriculum places particular emphasis on reasoning, critical thinking, organizational, listening and study skills at all grade levels. Children in grades K-3 receive instruction in all subject areas from their homeroom teacher, while students in grade 4-6 gain exposure to varying teaching methods through their departmentalized program. Beginning in grade 1, pupils complete homework assignments four nights per week; typical completion times range from 30 minutes nightly in grade 1 to two hours in grade 6. The arts and sports are important aspects of the curriculum. In art classes, students learn about color, texture, line and shape, while music courses teach the basic concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony and tempo. Evans' sports classes stress physical fitness and fundamental skills while familiarizing children with the rules of various sports. School tournament participation allows pupils of differing ability levels to learn and compete.
