Elmwood Franklin School
104 New Amsterdam Ave, Buffalo, NY 14216
The oldest preschool through grade 8 independent school in western New York State, EFS conducts a varied program that emphasizes basic learning skills and traditional subject matter. During the early years, four-, five- and six-year-olds take part in a well-developed reading program that incorporates storytelling, art, discussion, writing and dramatization throughout the school day. The lower school curriculum augments the standard subjects with music, art, foreign language, drama and daily physical education classes. Small skill-based groupings allow for individualization, and reading and math labs complement classroom instruction. Departmentalization begins in the upper school. Interdisciplinary themes integrate music, art, literature, history, science, math and foreign language. Elmwood Franklin's outdoor education program combines group problem solving with environmental and science studies. Special classes enable pupils to explore arts, computers, sports, science and nature, while extended winter options include skiing, tennis and extensive computer study. At all grade levels, each class completes one community service project annually.
