Founded and known as the Calvert Method School for its first 25 years, DA occupies two campuses in the southwestern section of Durham, near Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1959, the academy assumed its current name and began expanding beyond the elementary school years, culminating in the establishment of the upper school (grades 9-12) in 1972. DA dedicated a new campus, on Academy Road, to the middle school in August 2002; on Ridge Road, one location hosts the preschool, lower school and admissions office, while a second is home to the upper school. The college preparatory curriculum includes AP courses in all major subjects, as well as term- and yearlong electives and opportunities for advanced study. Students fulfill requirements in English, a foreign language, math, lab science, the fine arts, computer and physical education. Students in grades 9-11 engage in group community service projects, while seniors satisfy a 15-hour individual service requirement. Seniors may explore career options through a two-week internship in the community. Field trips incorporate outdoor education in grades 8-10, civil rights in grade 11 and wilderness adventure in grade 12. The Hill Center, an affiliate of the academy, serves students with specific learning disabilities who do not have primary emotional or behavioral problems.
