The English-born and -educated Anthony B. Dunn established this preparatory school as a boys' program providing a rigorous academic program in a family atmosphere. Girls were admitted as day students in 1971, and, in 1990, Dunn opened its boarding facilities to girls for the first time. Located in the Santa Ynez Valley, the school borders on the Los Padres National Forest. The approach is traditional and the curriculum college preparatory. The school also operates an well-developed outdoor education program. Class sizes average 10 to 12 students. Dunn offers a learning skills program at an additional cost for high-ability students with learning disabilities. Limited to 34 pupils, this program allows students to participate in the regular curriculum and also receive daily, one-on-one remediation with specialists in language skills. Required for all students, Dunn's outdoor education program is a four-year experiential curriculum modeled after the National Outdoor Leadership School. Boys and girls from all grade levels participate in seven- to 12-day wilderness excursions. Students assist in maintaining the school through a daily jobs program.
