Doane Stuart School
199 Washington Ave, Rensselaer, NY 12144
Doane Stuart was established upon the 1975 merger of Kenwood Academy, founded in 1852 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart, and Saint Agnes School, founded in 1870 by the Episcopal Diocese of Albany. The resulting institution represents the only successful merger between Catholic and Protestant private schools. Today, the school enrolls pupils of all faiths and backgrounds on a 27-acre campus that overlooks the Hudson River. The curriculum is college preparatory, with a broad range of electives. There are opportunities in grades 11 and 12 for participation in classes at the University at Albany (State University of New York), Albany College of Pharmacy, the Irish/American Exchange and the Albany Institute of Art. Students may also pursue independent study and internship or research options. Group community service projects are conducted in the lower and middle school; boys and girls in grades 9-12 perform 25 hours of compulsory individual service per year.
