Founded as an elementary school by area parents and three teachers, Discovery now offers a US-oriented program that runs through grade 12. Comprising nursery (age 3), prekindergarten (age 4) and kindergarten (age 5), the early childhood program emphasizes direct sensory experiences and facilitates both the development of mental abilities such as verbal skills and the proper use of English. During the elementary years (grades 1-5), children remain with the homeroom teacher for the core subjects, while specialists teach physical education, art, music, computer and library skills. Daily Spanish instruction is another aspect of the elementary curriculum. Basic skills are the focus at the secondary level (grades 6-12). Although fact acquisition is important, more stress is placed on research, synthesis, discussion and presentation. Cocurricular offerings are integral to school life. Notable examples include holiday celebrations, a science fair and a music festival. Extracurricular athletics round out the program.
